The skier from Zakopan, who attends the Physical Education Academia in Katowice, built her success upon an outstanding first run, taking the lead over Austria's Morik by 49 hundredths.

In the second run, Gasienica-Daniel skied with great determination, though losing a couple of hundredths in the central part. Despite finishing with the eighth time in the second run, she won gold and exulted in the finish area.

Behind Gasienica-Daniel’s success, there is also an Italian support. Her coach is Mauro Timon and comes from Turin.

In Val di Fassa, the Austrian national team also celebrated as they obtained the second medal at the Winter Universiade Trentino 2013. The 23-year-old Michele Morik from Nenzing offered a reason to smile to the „Wunderteam“, grabbing silver after an aggressive second run. The Swedish 25-year-old Veronica Elaine Smedh was also happy and satisfied as she was able to take the bronze medal after she finished with the fifth time in the first run.

Interviews

Maryna Gasienica-Daniel (POL): “Great. I'm the happiest person in the world. It’s a very important victory and I want to dedicate it to all the people who are close to me. First of all, to my sister, the first I hugged after crossing the finish line. It wasn't an easy race, this course was really demanding, but I managed to stay focused and find the right pace. This Universiade is becoming a wonderful experience with a cheerful and spontaneous atmosphere and with a great organization”.

Michelle Morik (AUT): “This is my first Universiade so this medal is an incredible satisfaction: it's a very exciting week. This medal encourages me in view of Friday's Special Slalom where I wish to repeat my today’s performance. It won't be easy given the level of the other girls. This medal is my redemption from the difficult moments I experienced after injuring my right knee two years ago.”

Elaine Veronica Smedh (SWE): “I wanted this medal so badly. It wasn’t an easy race both because it was a demanding course and because of the good performances of my rivals, but I skied with determination in both runs. At the end, the bronze medal is mine”.
